What is mushroom coffee?
Mushroom coffee gets talked about a lot and explained very little. Here is what it actually is, what goes into ours, and what to expect from it.
The short version
It is coffee with powdered mushroom extract blended into it. Not the mushrooms you cook with, and nothing psychedelic. The varieties used here are functional mushrooms such as Lion's Mane, Chaga and Reishi, which have a long history of use in traditional medicine across Asia and Eastern Europe.
Most blends use less coffee than a normal cup, so the caffeine is lower. That is the main practical difference people notice.
What is in ours
BrewedShroom is real Arabica coffee with three mushrooms blended through it. A lot of mushroom coffees on the market use instant coffee powder as the base. Ours does not.
- Lion's Mane is the one most people are looking for when they try mushroom coffee. It is commonly taken by people who want to feel clear-headed at their desk.
- Chaga is high in antioxidants and has been used in traditional Russian and Northern European medicine for centuries.
- Reishi has been used in Chinese medicine for a very long time, usually associated with calm rather than stimulation.
What it tastes like
Coffee, with an earthy edge. It is not a neutral cup and we would rather say so than have you find out after ordering. Our Chocolate flavour is the mildest and the one we recommend starting with. Coffee is closest to a straight black cup. Latte is the creamiest.
Milk softens it, and so does a little honey. Most people who stick with it stop noticing the earthiness within about a week.
Caffeine
There is real coffee in it, so there is real caffeine, just less than a standard cup. If caffeine keeps you up, treat it like coffee and drink it earlier in the day. If you want something with none at all, our turmeric latte is caffeine free.
How to make it
One scoop into hot or cold water, then stir. It dissolves without a machine or a filter. It works with milk, and it works iced. One pouch is 40 servings, which is a little over a month for most people.
Is it worth switching to?
Being straight with you: the research on functional mushrooms is early. Some of it is promising, much of it is small studies, and anyone telling you a cup of coffee will transform your health is selling harder than the evidence supports.
What we can say plainly is what is in the pouch, how much of it, and what it tastes like. People generally drink it because they want their morning coffee to be a bit less harsh and a bit more interesting. If that is you, it is worth a pouch.
Who should check first
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a health condition, speak to your doctor before adding any new supplement to your routine. Read the ingredient list if you have allergies.
